El nivel A1 de inglés es el primer nivel del Marco Común Europeo de Referencia (MCER) que define los distintos niveles de un idioma establecidos por el Consejo de Europa. En lenguaje coloquial, este nivel se denominaría «principiante» y, de hecho, «beginner» es la palabra oficial en inglés que define el nivel en el MCER. En la práctica, es posible encontrarse en un nivel previo al A1 de inglés. Un estudiante que esté comenzando a aprender inglés o que no tenga conocimientos previos de inglés está en un nivel anterior al A1.

Un nivel A1 en inglés debería ser suficiente para interacciones muy sencillas, por ejemplo para ir de turista a un país de habla inglesa. Un nivel A1 no resultaría suficiente para otros fines académicos o profesionales.

Puede comprender y usar expresiones familiares del día a día y frases muy básicas encaminadas a satisfacer necesidades de un tipo concreto.
Puede presentarse y presentar a otros, y puede preguntar y responder a preguntas sobre detalles personales, tales como decir dónde vive y hablar sobre personas que conoce y sobre cosas que posee.
Puede interactuar con otras personas de forma sencilla, siempre y cuando la otra persona hable despacio y con claridad, y esté dispuesto a ayudar.

El nivel A1 corresponde al primer nivel usuarios básicos con el idioma, es decir, aquellos capaces de comunicarse en situaciones cotidianas con expresiones de uso frecuente y utilizando vocabulario elemental. Este nivel de inglés viene definido por el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas (MCERL) el sistema que define y explica los diferentes niveles de expresión y comprensión oral y escrita para lenguas como el inglés.

Una de las preguntas más comunes de los niveles de inglés es sobre las habilidades que definen cada uno. ¿Qué competencias lingüísticas posee una persona con un nivel de inglés A1? El Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas MCERL define las siguientes:
Es capaz de comprender y utilizar expresiones cotidianas de uso muy frecuente, así como frases sencillas destinadas a satisfacer necesidades de tipo inmediato.
Puede presentarse a sí mismo y a otros, pedir y dar información personal básica sobre su domicilio, sus pertenencias y las personas que conoce.
Puede relacionarse de forma elemental siempre que su interlocutor hable despacio y con claridad y esté dispuesto a cooperar.
